The government’s goal is to ensure every citizen can live safely, and it is everyone's duty to oversee the resettlement process properly, stated President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. He has directed all officials and relevant departments to finish essential repairs by December 31, using the funds allocated by the government for infrastructure improvements. He emphasized that no part of these funds should be returned under any circumstances. The President mentioned that there are enough funds available to assist the people and restore normalcy. He highlighted the importance of all institutions working together effectively during this emergency, according to a statement from the President’s Media Division. President Dissanayake made these comments at a District Coordinating Committee meeting at the Uva Province Library Auditorium. The meeting focused on the efforts to restore normal life for those affected in the Badulla District and to improve key infrastructure. The disaster has impacted 64,140 people from 19,133 families in Badulla. A total of 418 houses were completely destroyed, while 7,703 houses suffered partial damage. The President inquired about the initiatives to restore vital infrastructure, including repairing damaged roads, electricity, water supply, communication systems, irrigation, restarting agriculture, livestock, inland fisheries, and reviving the health and education sectors. He stressed the importance of repairing all roads at once, without separating them into categories like those managed by the Road Development Authority, provincial roads, or local authority roads. He instructed officials to ask for additional funds if the current allocations were insufficient. He also requested that an estimate be prepared for all roads in the district needing permanent repairs, noting that funding could be available to start this work by January, as mentioned by the PMD. Officials reported that 90% of the district's electricity supply, affected by the disaster, has already been restored, and efforts are ongoing to restore the remaining supply quickly. They also noted that measures have been put in place to ensure the water supply meets the district's needs. The reopening of schools was discussed, and the President ordered that the government’s Rs. 15,000 aid for affected schoolchildren be distributed promptly through Divisional Secretaries.
