![]() April 12, 1932 - August 13, 2005 Kadirgamar was a long-time supporter of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). He was Foreign Minister in the SLFP government of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike. After the defeat of the government in 2001 became special adviser on Foreign Affairs to the President of Sri Lanka, Chandrika Kumaratunga. Despite being himself a Tamil, he strongly supported the Bandaranaike government's policy of not negotiating with the Tamil Tigers insurgents in northern Sri Lanka. He was educated at Trinity College, Kandy where he won the Ryder Gold Medal for the best all-round student. He obtained a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree from the University of Ceylon in 1953. In 1958 Mr. Kadirgamar was admitted to the United Kingdom Bar as a Barrister at Law, Inner Temple. On completion of his studies at Balliol College, Oxford, he was awarded a B.Lit. by the University of Oxford in 1960. He was the President of the Oxford Union in 1959.
