Mega reforms needed to resurrect UNP The UNP is in need of urgent oxygen to stop its downward slide in its electoral fortunes UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara told the Daily News.
He said mega scale reforms should be introduced to the party from the bottom to the top to come up with a new image to challenge the other parties.
He charged that there were elements within the party who want the status quo to remain. It means that the very existence of the UNP is endangered unless we changed the party s tempo, he said.
Young and promising leaders of the party have a pivotal role to play in its future.
That is why we proposed a vote based system in appointing members to responsible positions. This is a democratic move so that no one will be able to violate the system according to their whims and fancies , he said.
If any individual in the party is uncomfortable with this vote system, he will be a traitor to the party. All these changes are to be taken for the betterment of the party. Therefore, everyone has to work hard to lift the party from its present plight.
We must examine why the UNP is going from bad to worse in its recent history. At all elections we were defeated convincingly. In the last General Election we acquired only 30 percent of the preferential voting percentage. So, a reliable mechanism is needed to reverse the trend and regain the party s formidable position.
He further said, this is not a party of any individual. This party belongs to the people of this country. We had a proud history and UNP had been the decisive factor in the Sri Lankan history. If one is ruining the party, we have to stop him whosoever it is . The changes that are to be introduced will certainly affect the party and its hierarchy, he added.
