Retirement age is not the matter, Flaunting the laws of the country by Executive power is the matter. This President is destroying the ethics of the democracy. If Chief Justice is not Sarath Silva, this country will fall below Sudan, Zimbabwe and Burma in the ranking of democracy.

Employees are forced to retire at 55 so that they will be replaced by recruiting youths who need employment. If the retirement age is extended, unemployment will go through the roof.

You are right that retirement at 55 causes great hardship to those who have young children who need to be looked after. But then, unemployed youths are likely to create huge problems for the country.

The other point is, how many hours of work the government servants do in a day? If they can be more responsible and productive, wouldn`t it help in the development of the country thus paving the way for more employment within and outside the public sector?

Doesn`t the answer lie in the Public Service being streamlined with those in Public Service being made to work for their pay?
