Janaka rejects police bodyguards

Retired Army Chief Maj. Gen. Janaka Perera and UNP s Chief Ministerial candidate for the North Central Province has rejected a four-man police squad offered by the government following reports of LTTE threats on his life.

The war veteran said the Ministerial Security Division (MSD) had discussed the deployment with him over the weekend but he turned down the offer. `This is an obvious face saving measure on the part of the government,` he told The Island, urging the State to ensure his security in the run up to the August 23 NCP polls.

Vowing that he firmly believed in militarily crushing the LTTE, the former Ambassador said four police officers wouldn t be able to handle his security. Asked to elaborate, he said his security contingent should be double in strength to that of UPFA Chief Ministerial candidate Berty Premalal Dissanayake s group. He endorsed the ongoing efforts to destroy the LTTE while asserting the final solution as always articulated by the UNP should be political.

Perera, a professional soldier for 35 years, said his rival s security contingent comprised 30 Signals Corps personnel, 28 police officers and 12 Civil Defence Force. The Signals Corps personnel aren t the ordinary soldiers but well trained men in counter-terrorism operations. Dissanayake had been also provided with 12 vehicles, he said.

He called for a realistic security assessment without mixing politics with security issues.

The former General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the elite 53 Division said he wouldn t dispute Dissanayake s right to receive security. But the government should be alert to the security threat faced by the Opposition, he said. `Recently, police warned me of a severe threat to my life,` he said, but unfortunately they had done absolutely nothing to thwart a possible LTTE attempt.

He said the Rajapaksa administration which had repeatedly vowed to destroy the LTTE couldn t have been unaware of his contribution at the battlefield. `Troops under my command inflicted three major battlefield losses on the LTTE in 1995 in Ahchelu, Welioya and the Jaffna town,` he said. They were some of the biggest losses suffered by the LTTE at that time, he asserted, adding Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Army Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka as officers who had fought alongside with him would know his role. The LTTE would also try to hunt down those who had inflicted losses on them, he said.

He said the defence of Jaffna after the fall of the strategic Elephant Pass base in April 2000, too, had been led by him and the present Army Commander who was then the Jaffna Security Forces Commander.

Perera said during his tenure as the Ambassador to Jakarta (May 2005-April 2007), the LTTE lost one of its top arms procurement agents based there.

Responding to our queries, Perera asserted the breakaway LTTE faction (TMVP) could target him in the NCP as they had fielded Mangala Master on the government ticket in the Polonnaruwa District. `We aware of the presence of some TMVP cadres in the Anuradhapura District,` he said, warning their entry could jeopardise security in the entire area.

Perera who had qualified for university entry in 1966 to study Geology quit Peradeniya to join the army to complete a two-year basic Cadet course in Sandhurst. He also discussed the raising of the Independent Brigade comprising Special Forces and Commandos in 1990 which he commanded for four and half years and the Reserve Strike Force (53 Division) which he led for two and half years

This is not surprising from a Government which has adopted a carrot and stick policy to-wards its political opponents. Its virtually a part of 'Mahinda Chintanaya' which provides security personnel from the elite STF to its political buddies like Weerawansa, the child solider turned Chief Minister of the Eastern province and several others who suck upto it, While depriving security to those who oppose it.It will be recalled how this Govt removed the security of several politicians including Rauff Hakeem,Mano Ganeshan,Late Anura Bandaranaike (after he crossed the floor during the budget debate)Jayalath Jayawardene whose security was restored after the Supreme Court order.

We as a nation have to be grateful to a genuine war hero who has contributed immensely to secure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country irrespective of his political affiliations. It is a tragic irony that we provide protection to 'former terrorists' turned politicians and deny security to a war hero turned politician.

Ruhunu,

Janaka P used to be a Major General.....but accepted an SLFP appointment as Ambassodor to Australia.....and during this time as Ambassador he developed a Keen interest in business...

Today, According to his own Nomination Papers he is an Australian Business Tycoon.

Government has offered him Police Security, but he has refused. So, Govt. should not give him any security now. Janaka should have accepted the Police security, if he had security concerns.....

Janaka and the UNP are trying to use this security issue as a campaign issue.....and the Govt. is happy to let the UNP carry on and screw themselves.....

See what happenned to Traitor Ranil in the East???? Traitor Ranil was begging for Govt. Helicopter rides and screwed up the Election....

These are external measures indicating that these persons lack the inner strength. Only when they feel part of the people that the can lead the people in such an environment. When one feels for the people the people will protect. That is the only real protection

Vowing that he firmly believed in militarily crushing the LTTE,

Anus-am Nana has also said that he supports the Forces and the War Effort.....

But Here's the problem:

Traitor Ranil and Mangala say that the War must STOP immediately and Peace talks must begin.....Traitor Ranil said this in India barely one month ago.

Anusam says that he supports the Forces and the War.....

But UNP(Anusam/Traitor Ranil Faction) Cheif Opposition Whip Joseph Michael Perera says that Army Commander Sarath Foneksa is direclty responsible for White Van abductions....

The left hand is contradicting the right hand in the desperate UNP(Traitor Ranil/Anusam faction)

Gamiya,

This four-man squad is an insult to this man. More importantly, it will endanger the the lives of four security personnel themselves becuase there is no adequate force.

I don't like Ranils politics, but this man put his life on the line for the country, and for that our nation has to be greatful.

Ruhuna,

This person with many others as you have written made a sacrifice to the country.
When it comes to political scenario things quit different..see what went with Mangala,SB and Anura very soon Indian PM.
They have some talent to reach heights close to the peak but fail to keep them.. make others to rally round.
JP was a commander leading battle front SF was his deputy..both suffered at the hands of politicians at there promotions.
JP will try but things not very easy for his party to make a important person to win.
therefor he will learn it after the elections...that the platform was not correct.

The SLFP Govt. was very grateful to this Former Military officer, Janaka P. SLFP Govt. made him an Ambassodor to Australia. Traitor Ranil's Govt did nothing for Janaka and Janaka remained as Ambassodor for Australia during Traitor Ranil's 2001 premiership, While some Austin Fernando who had not even played with a toy Gun during his childhood was appointed as Defense Secretary.

Please remeber One thing Ruhuu, Military is Military and Politics is Politics. Govt simply cannot give elite security to each and every retired Military Officer in whose sarong, Traitor Ranil decides to hide....

UNP(Traitor Ranil Faction) will be happy if Gotabhaya's or Sarath Fonseka's security is reduced and assigned to Janaka P. This is what Prabha wants too. So that it will be easier to get at Gotabhaya and Sarath Fonseka.....Tiger's tried to Assasinate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Sarath Fonseka but failed due to High Security......

No body who is supporting the UNP(Traitor Ranil Faction) is under any Security threat. This is why Traitor Ranil can go around freely all over sri lanka....

Now, if Janaka P. was not a Traitor Ranil supporter, then ofcourse the Tiger's will try to get rid of him.

UNP can go ahead and fake an assasination attempt on Janaka P, two days before polling day....We the Gamiya's fully expect this to happen and are ready for it...
