Mahinda College, Galle, cricketers will today embark on their first overseas tour.
Twenty five players, comprising the under seventeen team which won the All-Island championship in that age group and the first XI team which won the school s big match this year against Richmond College, after a lapse of thirty years, will tour South India where they will visit Mysore and Bangalore. Each team will play two matches each in Mysore and one each in Bangalore.
Mahinda College was captained by Duleep de Silva in the big match which Mahinda won against Richmond in 1978 (Richmond College was captained by Mahinda Kalupahana), and the team was coached by his father Major G. W. S. de Silva. Ironically, De Silva (Snr) had played against Mahinda representing Richmond during his school days.
The team will be accompanied by Tour Manager Channa Weerasinha, representing the Mahinda College Cricket Foundation. It includes three Masters in Charge, Varuna Nishantha, Keerthi Dharmapriya, K.Prasad and coach Harsha Munasinghe.
The 1st XI team will be led by Rajitha Priyan and the Under 17 team by Romesh Buddhika.
The tour has been sponsored by the old boys of Mahinda College, the schools old boys in the UAE (Dubai) and Australia and well wishers.
