Contradicting last week s reported JVP call for the Pillaiyan Group to be disarmed, JVP Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa, representing the Patriotic National Movement, said that disarming the group would make it vulnerable to the LTTE. He urged that it be absorbed into the democratic process.
He told a media conference that the Opposition leader had compared Pillaiyan to Varadharaja Perumal, but the crucial difference was that the Pillaiyan Group after deserting the LTTE had worked with the government s security forces.
Weerawansa however said that the government must highlight and discuss its weaknesses, the issues involved and its task in a democratic process.
Disarming should be done systematically to safeguard the TMVP from the LTTE, he added before any kind of elections in the East, a population census should be conducted as none had been conducted there since 1981 and therefore the voters list could not be accepted.
`We are concerned and opposed to elections conducted according to a census taken 27 years ago. It is wrong on the part of the Government to conduct elections without improving the standards of living and everything else. It appears that the government has an advantage if elections are conducted under the present circumstances,` Weerawansa said.

Pillaiyan Group after deserting the LTTE had worked with the government s security forces
Didn't the Govt deny that any paramilitary group was working with the security forces?

In an article on a national weekend news paper MP Nandana Gunathilake has written that there is a conspiracy against Wimal within the party itself. And Wimal is not happy with the current politics of JVP.
This contradictory statement proves that. |

Pillaiyan Group after deserting the LTTE had worked with the government s security forces.
Recently I had direct experience of the damages that such alliances could result in. A guy in mufti questioned me at length, with the full approval of the forces in uniform. I asked the guy as to which group he belonged to and why he was not in uniform? If he was a spy - he ought to have gathered information confidentially. If he was an officer - he ought to have been in uniform. This kind of intimidation results is reducing the dignity of a law abiding citizen.
The guy asked me when I had arrived in Sri Lanka. I said 26 Feb. He pointed to the Malaysian seal which said 25 Feb??? He had gun power. So I left it at that. The experience reminded me of the Security Officer of the University of NSW - questioning me without wearing his uniform and also the NSW Police getting more upset with me when I demonstrated greater intelligence that they. I reminded myself that more stood to gain by me living - than by me dying in an area where the Police are reported to be no longer registering complaints. I heard stories of young men getting killed - without their loved ones knowing why or who killed. Jaffna people were stronger and upheld their dignity.
Baticaloa officers kept drilling me about my visit to Jaffna - as if that were a crime. I concluded that those were expressions of their fears.
