According to the Police the explosive device that was set off in Wellawatte yesterday might have targeted President Rajapaksa s son who uses the route to go to school or a routine military route-clearing patrol scheduled to pass that way.
Police bomb disposal squad officials said it was a claymore mine weighing some two kilogrammes and had been exploded using a remote control device. It had been hidden inside a flowerbed on the island in the middle of Galle Road.
An inquisitive beggar tried to open the suspicious parcel that was hidden among the foliage when it exploded killing him and injuring six civilians including four school children one of whom is in a critical condition. The damage had been minimal since the vicitm had turned the bomb upside down, thus creating a downward impact.
We believe the LTTE planted the bomb to target civilians, DIG Nimal Mediwaka told journalists. Wellawatte Inspector Mangala Dehideniya said the blast occurred a few minutes before the normal route-clearing patrol passed that way.
Five suspects were arrested and more than 40 were questioned by the police over the incident.
