UNP- SLFP (M) pact next week
Friday, 13 July 2007 - 11:33 AM SL Time

The main Opposition UNP will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the SLFP Mahajana Wing headed by former Minister Mangala Samaraweera on July 19, political sources said yesterday.

They said the two parties were now drafting the MoU to be signed at a ceremony at the Parliament complex.

UNP sources told the Daily Mirror they would jointly campaign to press for action against those responsible for the alleged secret pact with the LTTE and draining off public funds running into millions of rupees into the hands of LTTE leaders.

The new political combine will also raise its voice against human rights violations, the deterioration of law and order and rampant corruption in the country.

The new alliance will hold a public rally in Colombo on July 26, while several leftist political parties and several SLFP MPs are also expected to join forces with them in the struggle against the government.

Earlier, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe held talks with Mr. Samaraweera and MP Sripathi Sooriyarachchi, and decided to appoint a committee to study the SLFP (M) policy statement titled `Daring to Dream towards a New Sri Lankan Order.`

Later, the two ousted SLFP Ministers held talks with other political parties represented in Parliament to reach understanding on areas of common concern. During these talks, the JVP requested Mr. Samaraweera not to team up with the UNP, but become a party to an alliance led by it.

Commenting on the MoU, Mr. Samaraweera said they would not embrace the UNP policies in this task, but work on issues of common concern to get the country back on right track. He said that the UNP would not have to embrace policies of theirs either.

He stressed the need for the two major parties to work together to salvage the country from the present crisis. `During the last 14 years, I have been involved in confrontational politics with the UNP leadership. Whether we like it or not, we have to join hands with the UNP as it is a major political party in the country. Despite serious criticism we made against the Opposition, it secured 4.7 million votes at the last Presidential Election,` he said.

Samaraweera said that the JVP should also work with them as the third largest political force in the country.

For how many days?. I don't think UNP is a trust worth party to have a pact. Both the party want to come to power but neither thinks about the country.

This is exactly what Mahinda would want Mangala to do......to Mangala's credit I must say that due to his personal anger against the President, he is completely loosing his mind and is actually helping the president in the process.....

This pact will be publisized by GOSL at every nook and corner of Sri Lanka......

The MOU is simple. It allows Ranil to rear enter Mangala and Mangala to rear enter Ranil when ever they get horny.

Magha: That rear entry to take place by a coconut oil lamp.
With the oil, that much needed entry will be made
much smoother & it does not have to take place in
the dark.............
