Lester James Peries and the Sri Lanka Cinema
Friday, 2 March 2007 - 9:10 PM SL Time

Lester James Peries is the cornerstone of the Sri Lanka cinema has managed to take the Sri Lankan cinema to the world stage. To his credit he has touched almost all the parts of human behaviour in his creative work that spans well over 50 years.

The 88 year olds` film `Rekhava` in 1956 made a transition in the Sinhalese cinema in Lanka. Having seen the monotonous copies of the South Indian nature, `Rekhava` portrays a vibrant human experience on a simple good hearted village boy whose altruistic deeds make him loved by many has been misused by his crook father for financial gains, upon dissent the poor lad was compelled to please him, which however, has its repercussions. The villagers once loved turned their backs on the lad and even go to the extent to curse him; the beauty of the cinema was at last the Mother Nature answers the poor lad`s silent prayers in a symbolic manner. Lester has depicted this wonderfully in the limited technology that was available in the 50s without using too many words but plenty of pictures of nature. He`s a true asset for our Lankan cinema.

Out of his 19 films I believe his `Rekhava` has stunned most of the film lovers. The film celebrated its 50th year but the storyline still remains as new as ever.

The other classics he has directed are `Gamperaliya`, `Delowak athara`, `Ran salu`, `Nidhanaya`, `Deasa Nisa` and `Veera Puran Appu`. The afore-mentioned films are worth of watching. Now, here is the complete list of his directorial works:

The great Jewish-American film director Billy Wilder lived for 95 years and directed many classic such as 'Lost Weekend' and 'The Apartment' both won the Oscars.
Lets hope our own Lester can supersede him and create many more works that we love him for.

She is a new found girl in teledramas. She is around 20s and her name is Sandipany or something cannot remember exactly. her mother used to be a radio announcer and an actress called Geetha Kanthi jayakody. Not sure whether you've heard her.

You making me nervous now. I really liked her in the 80s when I was in my late teens with her cute kitty eyes (Balal es).In fact I used to collect her pocket calendars and had about 20 odd ;)
Well, she's got married a few years ago and has a kid. Apparently she doesn't act now for some reason may be the hubby wants her to stay at home.

So you're a Sabitha fan :) thats cool bro.

I prefer GEETHA Kumarasinghe!...lolz

As a child, she showed an inborn talent for singing and dancing. She was merely 16, when she was crowned a beauty queen. The contest was organized by a local Newspaper.
Though Geetha?s father did not approve of a career in movies, her Aunt was a friend of Dr. Lester James Peiris and it was her aunts mansion that Dr. Lester James Peiris used as the location for Ransalu. Little Geetha who spent her school vacations in her aunt?s house in Kollupitiya would imitate Punya Heendeniya.
It was in the year 1975 that Geetha debuted in Neil Rupasinghe?s Lassana Kella. That was the beginning of her career as an actress which would span four decades and she soon became an indispensable component of the commercial cinema of the country.
Geetha is the first Sri Lankan Actress to act in an entirely Indian film. (Mohana Punna Ge ?Charming smile)
She has often raised eyebrows by playing roles which were considered controversial. She turned down an offer to pose topless for Play Boy Magazine way back in the 1990's and she saw no logic in films that portrayed two people in love but avoiding physical sensuality.
Geetha has more than 80 movies to her credit. This includes Pakistani, Hindi, Japanese and French productions.

Thanks for the info buddy. Well, I cannot disagree with you, she's a very talented and beautiful woman with a greater command of English too unlike other Sinhalese actresses. I think in the film circles she has been under rated for some reason and I haven't a clue for that.

Btw, do you know her present boyfriend? He's Dr Sarath Amunugama, one of the ministers in Mahinda's cabinet ;)

Buddy, the world is a small place isn't it? I used to go that area especially to watch drama in the Lumbini theatre. Was just outside wasn't it? We might have seen each other too.

Yes, in Pembara Madhu she was young, intimacyy and hot cannot say anything or else I'll get kicked out buddy :)

Did you remember the guy who was riding the bike while singing to lure her (Geetha). I think she was born in the late 50s, so she's still not that old, probably late 40s. No wonder Amunugama is scre**ng her.
