Ousted Minister Sripathi Sooriyarachchi, whose security was withdrawn on Saturday, lodged a complaint with the Borella police yesterday, claiming his life was under threat and requested for immediate security.
Referring to media reports of his alleged involvement to harm President Mahinda Rajapaksa`s life, Mr. Sooriyarachchi stated in his complaint that `In my view, a group representing a political party was trying to trap me using these media reports.`
However, he said that these newspapers have no connection in this regard and requested the police to launch an independent inquiry against the persons providing these false information to the media.
Pointing out to a paragraph of a media report that read, `The same day Jathika Hela Urumaya`s Champika Ranawaka took oaths as an MP. He was in the company of Ven. Athureliya Ratana Thera when Mr. Sooriyarachchi had allegedly quipped `let us see what happens to the head in the next three months`. Mr. Sooriyarachchi was disappointed he had been given a non cabinet rank portfolio and was bitterly critical of the move,` the former minister said `I never mentioned `head of the Government` as stated in the paper.`
Mr. Sooriyarachchi also said his life was under threat following the recovery of Claymore mines at Kadawatha in October last year. `Even as Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and Military Spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe confirmed about the threat, my security has been withdrawn since Saturday,` he said.
President Rajapaksa last Friday sacked Mr. Sooriyarachchi and two other ministers from their portfolios. Later, on Saturday, their security was withdrawn under special direction from the President.
