Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa yesterday intervened on behalf of Rupavahini News Director T. M. G. Chandrasekera after IGP Victor Perera declined to provide security to his residence situated at the Richard de Zoysa Housing Complex at Koswatte, Battaramulla.
Chandrasekera thanked the minister for coming to his rescue.
Police Headquarters declined to provide security to Chandrasekara, who was manhandled by Labour Minister Mervyn Silva and a group of thugs on Thursday at the Rupavahini Corporation.
Police said that security could be provided only at the request of Rupavahini Chairman Ariyaratne Athugala.
Rupavahini Deputy Director General (Administration) Ruwan Palitha Sathkumara wrote to the IGP on Friday requesting security for Chandrasekara and his family. `Following the assault on Chandrasekera, there is a possibility of either he, his family or his house being attacked,` he said in his letter copied to Information and Media Minister Anura Priyadarashana Yapa, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, Secretary to the Ministry of Media and Information, DIG Colombo Range, DIG Nugegoda and SSP Nugegoda.
However, Rupavahini Chairman Dr. Ariyaratne Athugala said on Friday night that he was not aware of any such letter. `I also came to know about it when it was announced on television.`
