The Fisheries Minister opined that a third of the two thirds of the sea has been added to the fisheries sector and fishermen are now able to engage in their profession sans any differences.
The Minister was speaking at opening of the reconstructed Galle Fisheries Harbour. The Ceylon Fisheries Harbour Corporation carried out the reconstruction work, which was severely impacted by the tsunami. The Japan International Cooperation Agency assisted in the work. The total cost expended was 620 million rupees. Japan`s Ambassador Kiyoshi Araki, Southern Province Minister U.G.C. Ariyatilleke and Chairman of the Fisheries Harbour Corporation Asanka Abeygunasekera expressed their views on this occasion.
Parliamentarian Basil Rajapakse, giving his views at this event emphasised that Sri Lanka need partners to achieve peace and develop the country. Japan had been a close partner for a long period. He highly appreciated the assistance extended to Sri Lanka by Japan. Mr. Rajapakse underlined the need of the service and dedication of every citizen for the development of the country. Courage and dedication of the gallant soldiers should be taken as an example. Certain restrictions had been imposed on fishermen in the past. He asserted that the government was executing measures to grant an opportunity for the fishermen in these areas to engage in their profession without any obstacles.

| Good remark. However, still we import canned fish and sea foods from Moldive and some other South East Asian countries. |
