Responding to the statement issued by the Elections Commissioner, Sirisena Cooray, who headed the UNP`s rejected nomination list, said the party was not contesting under the spectacle symbol but only supporting the independent group, which was contesting the May 20 local polls under the that symbol.
?We have signed an agreement with the independent group to support them and work together and we hope there won`t be any problem,? he said.
Meanwhile, UPFA`s Colombo mayoral candidate Vasudeva Nanayakkara welcomed the Elections Commissioner`s statement saying the Commissioner had reacted to a complaint made by him.
Mr. Nanayakkara said a political party or group had no legal right to field its candidates through another party when the nomination list had been rejected.
