At the inquest into the death of six naval ratings, onboard the of the Israeli-built Dvora Fast Attack Craft (FAC) P418, where the City Coroner returned a homicide verdict and put down the cause of death to drowning, it did not transpire in evidence that any of the deceased sailors wore life Jackets, which could have prevented death by drowning.
In the course of the evidence it transpired that the Navy`s primary task was to escort troop ship Pearl Cruise II, carrying over 700 personnel, to the safety of Indian territorial waters.
At the inquest held by City Coroner Edward Ahangama on Saturday (13), Which was ordered by the Mallakam Magistrate, witness Naval Engineering Rating Chaminda Udayakumara testified that the primary function of the escort flotilla was to guard the transport vessel Pearl Cruise II, and in case of attack to escort the transport ship to Indian territorial waters.
Witness further said that explosive laden suicide craft measuring 5x3 feet and boats measuring 18x4 feet attacked the naval vessels.
Witness disclosed that the navy had removed the armaments of the ill fated FAC.
