The UNP yesterday charged that the government has fooled the people once more by increasing the price of fuel well above the world market purchase price.
Colombo District UNP parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake addressing a media briefing in Colombo, said that the government which purchases petrol in the world market at a maximum of Rs 41 a litre was selling it around Rs 93.
`Rs 41, is the maximum you would have to pay when petrol is purchased from Singapore. It could be bought for less from some Middle Eastern countries such as Iran and Iraq. This is the type of hypocrisy practised by the government. The excuse given is that world market prices have risen .But the truth is that the government was making a profit on the sale of petrol.`
Karunanayake said the tragedy was that two small parties such as the JVP and JHU have hijacked the government after bluffing the people with a host of false promises on the economy, cost of living, and North-East issue.
`The irony is that the JVP and JHU are trying hard to be in both the government and opposition. These are two unprincipled parties that want to create mayhem and economic chaos. They can survive only when there is anarchy.Peace is anathema to them since it would wipe them out.`
The UNP`s predictions of November 17, 2005, he said have now come true.
`The JVP and JHU love to revel in the present conditions. But the people going by the last local government election results seem to have realised their folly.Better late than never.`
Karunanayake said that the country was in a total mess with the law and order situation fast deteriorating and the cost of living rising by the day.
`We are in the opposition today since we spoke the truth. The UPFA is in government since it has mastered the art of lying`, he said.
