The army has failed to recruit the required number of Muslims for a special battalion it intends to raise for deployment, particularly in the eastern theatre. Walk-in-interviews held at Samanthurai, Kalmunai, Nintavur, Akkaraipattu and the Combat Training School at Konduwattuwan from April 5 to 10 did not produce the desired results, a military official said.
The Sunday Island learns that over 100 youth chosen by the military were yet to be recruited. An authoritative military official said that walk-in interviews would be held in areas outside the Ampara District.
Army Headquarters intends to recruit about 350 Muslim youth and transfer the rest required to form an infantry battalion from existing formations. The official acknowledged that contrary to reports, the battalion would not be exclusively Muslim.
