Special arrangements have been taken by the police to maintain law and order during the Sinhala and Hindu New Year season by deploying an additional force of more than 400 policemen and 60 special emergency radio communication units in the Greater Colombo area.
The additional force consisting of officers in uniform and civvies have been deployed especially in urban areas where people gather in large numbers for shopping and festivities. Colombo DIG Pujith Jayasundara said additional troops had been deployed to ward off possible untoward incidents.
He said the police would watch out for miscreantssuch as pickpockets who would try to take advantage of the heavy rush of last minute shopping.
The DIG advised the public to contact the police emergency on 2433333 at the Police Headquarters to report any untoward incidents.
Meanwhile a special police bicycle unit has been deployed to monitor traffic offences and criminal acts. The units will help ease the heavy traffic jams in shopping areas.
