Seven persons including a man in robes who attempted to sell two gold Buddha statues along with another 20 Buddha statues of great antique value, were arrested by Galagedara police last Friday.
These persons were trying to sell the statues for 1.5 million rupees.
The suspects are reported to be residents of Bibile, Galagedara, and Bingiriya areas. Some statues had been buried in a pit in the garden of a Buddhist temple in Bibile.
Among the suspects are two former serviceman of the Army and the Navy.
Under the instructions of the Senior Superintendent of Police E. W. Gunathilake, the raid was conducted by IP Susil Mallawarachchi, the OIC of Galagedara police along with IP Bogoda.
Senior Police officials of Bingiriya police station added that further investigations were being carried out.
