The recent media reports of an attack on an LTTE position at Vammiyadikkulam, Kanjikudichcha-aru appeared to have been exaggerated, senior military and police officials said.
They acknowledged that the reports that claimed of the Vanni faction abandoning a major camp and seeking government protection weren?t true.
A senior police official said that they were aware of last Thursday?s firearms attack on a Vanni position on the outskirts of the Kanjikudichcha-aru jungles. But weren?t aware of anything beyond that, he said, adding that it couldn?t be even considered an attack. Karuna loyalists had fired a few rounds at Vanni cadres and fled. That?s all we know, he said.
Officials said that one-eyed LTTE commander (Jeyanthan) in charge of the area moved to Sagama where the STF had a detachment. His move had come after the attack, they said, adding that Jeyanthan or any of his cadres didn?t seek government protection. `What they did was sending us a message that an armed LTTE group was in the vicinity of the Sagama detachment,` one officer said.
