'VP suggests DDCs handle tsunami aid

I was intially in support of the Joint Mechnism for handlign tsunami funds. but the more i read on this issue the more i found that it was indeed giving into more of the LTTE`s demands. LTTE only professes to represent the tamil minority yet it doesn`t. If it did it wouldn`t be involved in human rights viloations against it own community.

i know there isn`t enough information being circulated on the exact conditions of the joint mechnaism. but from what i have read it appears to give a 50% representation to the LTTE and 30% to the governement and 20% to the muslim congress. I don`t think this is right in the least. the government is bending over backwards to please a terrorist arm which has violated the Cease fire agreement numerous times.

For those of you are agreeing to the Joint Mechanism.. all i can suggest is that you try to understand what it involves.

Perhaps the JVP does for `once ` have a bright idea. handling funds through the DDC`s is perhaps the best solution. A select committee could oversea that the funds are not mishandled.

JVP`s suggestion is commendable as it will give an opportunity for a demaocratic way of handling the devastated areas.LTTE is not at all worthy of such a responsibility counting the numbers of atrocities committed by this terrorists who do not care a tuppins for opponents. None of the pundits in the UNF and SLFP could not come up with a viable solution like this.LTTE could be entrusted with such resposibilities provided they give up arms and come forward the democratic way like Douglas Devananda,Karuna etc.

    Ok,

At least JVP goons have `for a change` made an alternative recommmendation. Because of their haggling, you know how long it took to ARRIVE at a decision since Tsunami? Over 4 months! So people have to live in tents until JVP booruwas come out with a decision.

Why does it matter who handles relief as long as it gets done and reaches people who need it in a timely manner?

    SK63,

How can you be so sure that LTTE will not use the funds to strengthen it`s military?

  • 21 Apr 2005 17:14:24 GMT

    Dear Magha,

I dont know how involved you are in Tsunami relief work. In case you have visited a camp (I visited only Galle and Matara not the East), you will know how much they need relief. You know what, purely in humanitarian grounds even if 10% reaches them that would be a great service.

If you see the pitiful state of those people you don`t care who swindles part of the money. You would want at least 10% to reach the people.

By the way International aids can mot be used to buy guns. There are established procedures of accountability in place.

    Dear SK63 and noel,

We all would like to see all AID go to the desreved and efficiently. International AID directly given by donor governments may not go to buy arms but there are NGO`S involved in this and LTTE IS capable of taking the advantage as they have done in the past.` Two Military planes`, not too bad. Yes we did have corrupt governments who still trying to come to power , and SK63 what do you have to say about those and those people who were top cabinet members of UNP for 13 years? Sri Lankans can not trust any body no Sinhalese nor LTTE.

  • 21 Apr 2005 17:59:52 GMT

magha.. `Two Military planes` what does that have to do with the issue at hand.. those planes were bought from the money sent by the Tamil Diaspora.. and it`s more than two!! anyways.. whatever money that goes to TRO or any other NGO in the Northeast will constantly be watched by the international donor community.. there`s no room for any wrong doings by the LTTE.. like u said.. if the international community has declared the LTTE as a terrorist org.. don`t u think they`d make sure that their money goes to proper use.. don`t forget even if the GOSL overlooks something.. Uncle Sam sure wont`!!

    noel,

Love to have a guy like you as a neighbour and I have no problem with helping Tamils affected by the Tsunami as well as two decades of war.

  • 21 Apr 2005 19:10:03 GMT

    Kanthun,

Thanks for being so naive, LTTE got tired of playing with kites and the Tamil Diaspora sent two planes. if I am ready to live in the same neighbour hood with a guy like noel I have to watch my back if Tamils like you around.

    Dear Magha,

My constant criticism about PA govt. Comes due to the fact that they have no vision to take SL economy forward or solve the ethnic problem. Their achievements have so far been nothing and they can not take SL forward. I not even for a moment contradict your argument about corrupt UNP politicians. For that matter PA guys corrupt too.

Now we have a choice to make. Do we select corrupt UNP politicians or corrupt PA politicians? Not a pleasant choice I agree but those are the only two alternatives we have. I would select UNP because at least they were better managers of the economy. Even during the very short time period they were in power recently, you saw how the business activity improved. Has anything happened after PA hijacked power?
