A massive fraud involving sewing machines purchased by the Colombo Municipal Council, for distribution amongst the needy, was uncovered recently by the Modera Police.
Acting on a tip off, the police raided a place in Kiribathgoda where negotiations were being carried out for the sale of 110 machines.
Inquiries conducted by the Modera Police revealed that these 110 machines, valued at over Rs.1,400,000 were part of a total consignment of 1,060 sewing machines meant for distribution to the needy within the CMC area.
A total of 555 sewing machines had been removed form the CMC stores at Rajamalwatte , Colombo 15 for distribution and the 110 machines recovered in Kiribathgoda are suspected to be a part of that lot.
However, further inquiries revealed that documents were not available for 145 machines, valued at over Rs.1,500,000, which are said to have been distributed by members of the Municipal Council said OIC, Crimes Division, Modera Police, IP Priyanka Wijenayake.
The Charity Commissioner of the Colombo Municipal Council Hemantha Gamage and two other suspects have been remanded till January 4, 2006, in this connection, under Case B- 8793.
Several Members of the CMC are due to be questioned in the near future regarding the 145 sewing machines, of which documentary evidence is missing, Wijenayake concluded.
