The support of the JHU to President Mahinda Rajapakse was based exclusively on the 12 point proposal which would prevent Sri Lanka being divided and also being redeemed from the precarious position that it has fallen in, said leader of the Jathika Urumaya Rev. Ellawela Mettananda Thera at a media briefing held on Monday.
The JHU did not seek any benefits itself and was only interested in safeguarding the sovereignty of Sri Lanka. Nothing else matters to us how or later, he said.
As long as the proposals submitted by the JHU and included in the Mahinda Chinthanaya are addressed the JHU will continue to support Mahinda Rajapakse and lead the struggle to save Sri Lanka form bury decided even at the risk of death, he said.
The manifesto of the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was for federation and division of the country. We cannot understand the mentality of the Sinhala people who were among the 4.7 million of voters who opted for federalism by voting for Ranil.
We can say without fear that since 1815, a true leader has been elected to rule this country. We urge him not to give in to pressures brought on him and oppose any attempts to divide the country. General Secretary of the JHU, Rev. Omalpe Sobitha Thero said that is heartening to note that President Mahinda Rajapakse has stopped the crises of new liquor licences. This will lead to a reduction in antisocial activity. We further request the President to ban the sale of liquor at all supermarkets.
Parliamentary group leader of the JHU Rev. Athuriliya Rathana Thero said that the country is facing a sensus threat to its sovereignity and it is the prime responsibility of the president to protect the people.
Lay advisor to the JHU Champika Ranawaka said that they treated he Presidential election as a referendum on federation. The UNP and its cronies promoted the division of the country under cover of federalism. The majority of our people have rejected the programme of the UNP.
It must be also borne in mind that the recent killings of army personnel was due to the advantages gained by the LTTE form the CFA and that the UNP leader must take the responsibility for all such killings Ranawaka concluded.
