Former Matara District MP Dallas Alahapperuma who played a leading role in the election campaign of President Mahinda Rajapakse is likely to be appointed to parliament to fill the vacancy created by the demise of former Foreign Affairs Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. He is also tipped to be appointed as the Deputy Minister of Samurdhi Affairs.
A Western Provincial Council source told the Daily Mirror that Mr. Alahapperuma has been nominated together with WPC Chief Minister Reginald Cooray. However the final decision is to be taken at the SLFP Central Committee meeting today.
Chief Minister Cooray who was out of the country returned home yesterday according to the source. Provincial Minister Hector Bethmage was acting as the Chief Minister during the absence of Mr. Cooray. Political sources said that former President Chandrika Kumaratunga who still functions as the leader of the SLFP has decided to name Mr. Cooray to fill the vacancy while President Mahinda Rajapakse has named Mr. Alahapperuma instead.
Earlier sources said that Ms. Kumaratunga had decided to nominate herself but later decided to name Mr. Cooray as she was convinced that her name would not be approved by the central committee of the SLFP.
