A group of thugs, who were under the influence of liquor, had on Saturday night entered the official quarters of the Kadugannawa Station Master and brutally assaulted him and his wife after being told not to paste posters of the UNP presidential candidate on their walls.
According to the OIC Kadugannawa police, Chief Inspector Sriyantha Pieris, Two special squads have been deployed to track down and arrest the suspects led by UNP provincial councillor Sapumal.
Meanwhile railway unionists are demanding that the government investigate the assault
`UNP supporters who were putting up posters of their Presidential candidate in violation of the election regulations had attempted to paste posters on the walls of official quarters of the Kadugannwa Station Master last Friday. The Station Master and his wife had requested the partymen not to desecrate their walls. The thugs in return had beaten them,` Convenor of the Organisation for Protection of the Properties and Rights of Railway Employees, Sumathipala Manawadu said.
He alleged that among the attackers was a UNP member of the Pradeshiya Sabha. `We demand that police arrest these thugs and punish them. The public must understand that behind a cheating smile of the UNP candidate on posters, there is a bloody history of suppression and annihilation of public servants` voice,` Manawadu said.
`The attackers had been identified and their names were given to police. The incident took place after the nominations and it was violating the election laws. We demand the authorities to deliver what they promised; a violation free election.
`Next, we remind the Railway employees that it was the UNP that tried to sell off the Railway Department to the private companies and request them to join us in condemning this undemocratic thuggery ,` he added.
