Defending champions Kingswood College Kandy with a resolute defence strangled St. Peter`s College to earn a crushing 23-3 win claiming the prestigious Milo President`s Trophy for an unprecedented third successive year in a one-sided final at Sugathadasa Stadium on Saturday.

Final an anticlimax

The winners who led 18-3 at the interval collected their points from a converted try, two tries, a penalty goal and a drop goal to which the losers could only reply with a solitary penalty, in a game which turned out to be anti-climatic.

Kingswood dominated the entire first half driving the opposition into submission, as their forwards and backs excelled in the set pieces and gave no chance to the rivals.

Even in loose play, the Kingswood forwards rattled their counterparts and the two players who made the difference was scrum half Heshan Premarathne and number eight Navin Wijethunge.

Premarathne was a constant threat with his sniping runs at the breakdown, while Wijethunge despite his bulky physique opened up gaping hopes in the Peterite defence.

St. Peter`s never had a game plan to counter the title favourites and was guilty of going for too many hits.

Kingswood opened up a sizeable half time lead to turn the game into a no contest, as the lads from Colombo 4 faced a desperate second half struggle to make a match of it.

Petes pay the price for senseless rugby

Although only scoring a try late in the second half, Kingswood absorbed the pressure well, as St. Peter`s ran out of ideas and indulged in senseless rugby.

Despite a terrific last 15 minutes from the Petes, who kept on hammering at the defence they failed to find a chink in the Kingswood armoury.

The winners drew first blood in the seventh minute when scrum half Heshan Premarathne scored from a third phase backline move which arose from a penalty in the opposition 10 metre line.

Full back Eranda Weerakkodi`s conversion shot them to a 7-0 lead and six minutes later made it 10-0 thanks to a superbly executed 25 metre drop goal by stand-off Dev Anand.

St.Peter`s struggling to make an impact got their only score in the game when fly half Irfath Meedin, atoned for a missed kick in the fourth minute by firing a 25 metre penalty in the 18 minute to make the scores 3-10.

Stung by that score Kingswood added a further 13 unanswered points to retain the coveted title in style.

Fore the lads from Kandy, number eight burly Navin Wijethunge scored their second try in the 24th minute which ensued off a fourth phase move from a ruck close to the Petes line, and three minutes later Weerakkodi slotted a 30 metre penalty before the turn around.

In the 39th minute lock Nuwan Bandara added the icing on the cake with a simple try which arose from a powerful mid field break by back-row forward Wijethunge.

The triumph by Kingswood, also marks the third consecutive year they had remained undefeated in both the SLSRFA conducted League and Knock-out tournaments, and deservedly confirmed their status as undisputed kings of schools rugby.

Patana win Premier Trophy

Isipatana M V clinched the Premier Trophy when they held off a determined rally from Science College Mount Lavinia to post a 26-15 win in the final at the same venue on Saturday.

The winners who trailed 10-14 at half time scored from three converted tries and a try to which the losers replied with a converted try, a try and a penalty goal.

STF can fight with LTTE. Face to face SL army has won every battle. LTTE can attack from hiding. Face to face they can't fight with SL army. That is why they have not come to war this time yet. They are thinking about attacking camps in most unexpected times. Their success was only in those types of attacks. Not in face to face fights like in a war. They now have go down in spirits and power. They will not start a war now. I will bet it.

Awesome!! Congrats to kingswoodians, they showed that rugby is not the game of running and passing, their powerful forwards showed class of set pieces and their mobility, this is what I call champagne rugby, they must have a superb coaching team behind them or this is the way how they play up there

#coaching tip for other schools
Watch some other southern atmosphere international matches especially all blacks NOT the boring English
