The Police Election Secretariat has planned a massive increase in security and declared the Election Commissioner`s office and surrounding areas a high security zone.
This move was taken after the police intelligence reports that LTTE suicide squad members had infiltrated Colombo targeting leading presidential candidates on Nominations day, October 6, DIG (Elections) Gamini Navaratne told The Island yesterday.
He said that special police and army contingents would be deployed and the area would be restricted for normal vehicular movements to avoid any untoward incident.
He repeated his request to public to be vigilant of suspicious characters and to inform immediately the nearest security establishments of any such observations.
Police had further instructed the candidates not to entertain their organizers at massive gatherings of party supporters, which would hinder security measures.
`Intelligence reports indicate that the LTTE would make another attempt, similar to the assassinations of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and presidential candidate Gamini Dissanayake,` DIG Navaratne said.
