JO safeguards SLFP policies; Maithri still with bond racketeers – Mahinda

Present crisis due to appointment of Ranil as PM in Jan. 2015

Former President and Kurunegala District MP Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday declared, in Anuradhapura, that those SLFPers in the Joint Opposition safeguarded the policies of the SLFP.

Addressing a mammoth public rally held by the JO at the Salgado grounds, former SLFP leader Rajapaksa said that it wasn’t party symbol but its policies that mattered. Referring to the last parliamentary polls in 2015 August, the former President said that they wouldn’t be tricked again.

Rajapaksa accused his successor of having handed over the SLFP that had been formed by D.A. Rajapaksa, Maithripala Senanayake and Ratnayake, to the UNP.

Alleging that the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe administration had destroyed democracy, the former President said that the country was in crisis today because Sirisena had appointed UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister immediately after the change of government.

Rajapaksa pointed out that President Sirisena himself had recently said that the UNP perpetrated the bond scams within weeks of the formation of the new government. Rajapaksa said that President Sirisena was still with those who had committed the bond rackets.

The former President accused the government of depriving the farmers of state support and selling national assets.

Condemning attacks on the Maha Sangha, Rajapaksa alleged the government was pushing for constitutional reforms to divide the country on ethnic lines.
