G7 allies meet against backdrop of wars in Ukraine and Iran, with unpredictable US
Foreign ministers from major Western democracies are gathering in France this week amid ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, economic challenges, and growing concerns about the unpredictable nature of U.S. foreign policy. The two-day meeting is taking place at the historic 12th-century Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay, located around 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Paris. This event includes ministers from the G7 countries—Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the U.S.—as well as representatives from the European Union. The G7, which first convened as six nations in Rambouillet 50 years ago, has typically dealt with its key economic and geopolitical issues through a strong consensus. However, this unity has weakened since Donald Trump took office again as U.S. president in 2025. U.S. policy changes have left both allies and adversaries scrambling over the past year, with shifts ranging from tariffs to Ukraine and now the conflict in the Middle East, which European diplomats say lacks clear goals or an exit plan. France’s army chief expressed concern on Wednesday about the unpredictability of Washington, stating it affects the interests and safety of its allies. Thomas Gomart, director of the French Institute of International Relations in Paris, remarked that "the U.S. attitude is a destabilizing factor for the international system for all countries, not just G7 members, but also for China and many others worldwide." In a notable change from the past, officials have decided not to pursue a comprehensive final statement to avoid public disagreements.
