President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has shared his goal of making Sri Lanka known worldwide for prioritizing humanity. Speaking at the International Women鈥檚 Day event in Colombo today (08), he emphasized that Sri Lanka wants to send a strong message to the global community about its commitment to humanity, especially during times of conflict and war. While many countries may be economically advanced, President Dissanayake pointed out that Sri Lanka, despite its economic struggles, aims to build a reputation as a place where compassion, empathy, and humanity thrive. He also mentioned that women and children will be central to national policies as the government works towards a fair and compassionate society for all citizens. During his speech, he thanked the women of the National People鈥檚 Power (NPP) for their crucial role in supporting the current government's formation and journey. "I believe the sisters gathered here today did something remarkable when this government was established," he stated. "This is also the first time in recent history that so many women have come together in one place. A government鈥檚 success can be measured by how much support it receives from the women of the country, and the presence of thousands of women here today shows the strong public trust in our administration." The President also shared the government's mission to create a brighter future for women, who have long faced emotional and social challenges. He noted that national development cannot happen without addressing the specific issues women encounter. "Our future plans for the country will focus on the problems women face just because they are women," he said. "By tackling these issues, we can uplift the whole nation." Additionally, President Dissanayake expressed concerns about the rising drug crisis in Sri Lanka, highlighting how it is affecting the youth and causing distress among mothers. He explained that when a child struggles with addiction, the mother feels the most pain, and the resulting stigma often isolates families in their communities. In response, the government has initiated a nationwide program aimed at combating drug abuse and is committed to eliminating it completely.
