UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy wrapped up his official visit to Sri Lanka on the 18th. During his stay, he met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. They discussed the strong and lasting relationship between the UK and Sri Lanka, which has developed over many years. In their meeting, they talked about working together on economic matters, reconciliation, humanitarian issues, and Sri Lanka's role in the Global Charter on Children’s Care Reform. This global initiative aims to improve family-based care for children, prevent unnecessary separations, and end the institutionalization of kids around the world. Additionally, Lammy spoke with the Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa. He also met with Tamil political leaders and representatives from civil society. They emphasized the UK's commitment to supporting meaningful reconciliation, transitional justice, and a peaceful future for all people in Sri Lanka. Lammy promised ongoing support for Sri Lanka's economic stabilization, reform efforts, reconciliation, and development that focuses on the people. In a post on X (previously Twitter), the British High Commission in Colombo highlighted the significance of Lammy's visit, mentioning topics ranging from the Global Charter on Children’s Care Reform to political discussions, indicating Sri Lanka's importance to the UK.
