Sri Lanka Police have issued a warning that foreign nationals driving without a valid license will face prosecution. This action aims to protect both tourists and local people as traffic accidents involving foreigners are on the rise. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) F.U. Wootler, the Police Media Spokesperson, highlighted that ensuring safety for visitors and the public is very important. In a statement, he mentioned that in the year 2025, five foreign nationals sadly died in road accidents while driving in Sri Lanka. The police also reported seven serious accidents, 78 minor injury cases, and six incidents of vehicle damage. Investigations found that both drivers and vehicle owners were breaking the Motor Traffic Act, according to the police spokesperson. He stressed that “foreign nationals who drive without a valid driving license will be prosecuted.” The police have started a special traffic operation from coastal areas and are planning to expand to other parts of Sri Lanka. Penalties include fines ranging from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000, and in cases of fatal accidents, driving licenses could be suspended along with possible imprisonment. Additionally, he pointed out that anyone renting a vehicle, motorcycle, or three-wheeler to a foreign national must ensure they have one of the valid permits required.
