General

The Sri Lanka Army has announced plans to suspend a Sergeant from the Kuttigala camp in Embilipitiya. This Sergeant was remanded after being charged with covering up the death of a soldier who was electrocuted by an unauthorized power line at the camp. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested four people, including the Sergeant, on Monday, October 16, nearly a year after the soldier's death. The deceased, identified as Hettiarachchige Chalaka Madushan Jayasinghe, was a 31-year-old father of two from Malgammana in Matale. He served as a soldier with the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC) at the Kuttigala training camp. Jayasinghe had been reported missing since January 26, 2025, while on duty. When his family inquired about his disappearance, they were told in writing by the camp that he had deserted his post. However, a week later, his body was found in a forested area near the camp. Following a complaint from his relatives, the Homicides and Organized Crime Investigation Division of the CID began an investigation. During this inquiry, a long-time cattle herder near the camp provided crucial information. This led investigators to question the Sergeant and four others, revealing that an illegal electrical wire had been installed at the camp on January 26, 2025, to protect crops and hunt wild boars for meat.
