Saman Ekanayake, the former Secretary to the President, is set to appear in court again today, February 18. He was remanded during a hearing at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on February 11. This case involves a complaint against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is accused of misusing over Rs. 16.2 million in public funds. The funds were allegedly used to pay for a private trip to the United Kingdom in 2023 to attend his wife’s graduation ceremony. Ekanayake was arrested because he is suspected of helping Wickremesinghe by approving the use of public money for this trip. When the case was reviewed on February 11 by Colombo Fort Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara, Ekanayake was remanded again after hearing arguments from Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, who represented the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa, who defended Ekanayake.
