Saman Ekanayake, the former Secretary to the President, has been granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, according to a report by Ada Derana. Colombo Fort Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara issued an order for Ekanayake's release on two surety bails, each worth Rs. 2 million. The request for bail was presented by President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa. Ekanayake was taken into custody and remanded in connection with a case involving the alleged misuse of public funds linked to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. This case arose from a complaint against Wickremesinghe, claiming he misappropriated over Rs. 16.2 million in public funds. The allegation states that these funds were used to pay for a private trip to the United Kingdom in 2023 to attend his wife’s graduation ceremony. Ekanayake faces charges of assisting this offence by approving the use of public money for Wickremesinghe’s personal visit to the UK.
