The Supreme Court has ruled that it is not necessary to make a formal decision on the “Protection of Occupants” and “Rent Repeal” bills. This information was shared by Speaker of the House Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne in Parliament today (17). He explained that, following a promise made to the Attorney General by the Secretary of the Ministry of Justice on February 6, the bills will not move forward in their current forms. Instead, they will be sent to an expert committee for review, and steps will be taken to introduce them as new bills. The petitioners have withdrawn their petitions, which led the Supreme Court to determine that a formal decision under Article 121.3 of the Constitution was not needed. The Speaker also stated that he had requested the Supreme Court’s decision to be included in today's official report.
