Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala announced that the site of the recent shooting in Akuregoda, where Attorney-at-Law Buddhika Mallawaarachchi and his wife tragically lost their lives, is not classified as a High Security Zone. He emphasized that this was a single incident and does not threaten national security. Minister Wijepala extended his condolences to the families of the deceased couple. During a parliamentary session on the 17th, in response to a question from Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, he pointed out that some are trying to frame this event as a significant threat to national security. He stressed that this homicide should not be seen as a danger to the rule of law. "We value every life in Sri Lanka. We do not accept anyone being killed by another person. As a government, we are dedicated to ensuring the safety of all citizens and have implemented many measures since we took office," he stated. He also mentioned the high number of weapons in circulation and noted that firearms given to politicians in the past have not been returned. This situation is part of the government's current challenges. “These killings are happening while we are investigating weapons that have been supplied to criminal groups from military camps. We strongly condemn this culture of violence and, once again, offer our sincere condolences,” he concluded.
