Today, a group of lawyers led by the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) held a protest march in response to the recent murder of a lawyer and his wife in Akuregoda, Thalangama. The march began at the Supreme Court Complex and ended at the BASL Head Office. On the previous day, February 15, the BASL called all its members to Colombo to discuss their next steps regarding the double murder. During this meeting, they decided that lawyers throughout Sri Lanka would not attend court cases today. As a result, many lawyers withdrew from court proceedings, which caused difficulties for the public needing legal help. Additionally, black flags were displayed outside various courthouses as part of the protest. The bodies of the slain lawyer and his wife were taken to a private funeral home in Colombo yesterday before being transported to their home in Godamunna, Pitigala. Currently, their remains are at their residence, where lawyers, local residents, and others are paying their respects. The final ceremonies are set to take place this afternoon. The lawyer and his wife were tragically shot on February 13, 2026, in a supermarket parking lot about one kilometer from the Sri Lanka Army Headquarters in Akuregoda, Thalangama.
