Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who also serves as the Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, emphasized the need for education transformation to help rebuild Sri Lanka. During a meeting with education officials from the Hambantota District on February 12, she highlighted that decisions affecting rural areas should not come from Colombo. Instead, plans should be developed based on local needs and submitted through the District Coordination Committees by structural committees. She stressed that all education officials, from the Ministry down to individual schools, must work efficiently and prioritize a human-centered approach. The meeting took place at the Hambantota District Secretariat, where education leaders, including chief prelates of pirivenas, zonal education directors, teacher advisors, and principals, were invited to share the challenges they face. Concerns raised by officials included unequal salaries among principals, the need for improved school infrastructure, issues related to the separation of national and provincial schools, and enhancing pirivena education. In her address, Prime Minister Amarasuriya explained that the new education reforms began in 2025 through discussions, consultations, and gathering of necessary data. She acknowledged the support received from officials during this process and expressed hope for their continued cooperation. She noted that these reforms are a response to a strong demand from society. Many have tried to implement similar changes in the past, but the current political vision recognizes that transforming education is crucial for rebuilding the country. According to her, the most valuable asset of Sri Lanka is its human resources, which must be properly nurtured. The education system holds the key to solving many of the country's crises, such as economic challenges, social issues, drug abuse, violence, political corruption, waste, and the decline of human relationships. For the government to achieve its vision, transforming education is essential.
