Namal Rajapaksa, the National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and a Member of Parliament, expressed that supporting Buddhism, the Buddha Sasana, and the Maha Sangha is not an act of racism. He shared these thoughts during a media briefing on November 11 at the party office located on Nelum Mawatha. Rajapaksa, who identifies as a Sinhala Buddhist, affirmed his dedication to preserving the various cultures, languages, and religions present in the nation. “We advocate for Sinhala Buddhism because most people in this country practice Buddhism. We identify as Buddhists here. Therefore, we represent the people of Sri Lanka and Buddhists,” he explained. He reiterated that standing up for Buddhism, the Buddha Sasana, and the Maha Sangha should not be seen as racism. Rajapaksa highlighted that the SLPP aims to not only defend Buddhist heritage and philosophy but also to protect all religions and cultures in Sri Lanka. “This nation was established on a Buddhist foundation. We can safeguard all religions in the country. That is why we are confident,” he added. He also mentioned that his strong belief in his own religion and culture allows him to respect and support others. “As a Sinhala Buddhist, I’ve been able to support other cultures because I have faith in my own culture and religion. Those who lack belief in any religion may struggle to protect someone else’s language or religion,” he stated.
