The Gampaha High Court is set to announce its verdict today in the murder case of former Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala. The court had postponed the verdict announcement from January 14 until today. Athukorala, who represented the Polonnaruwa District, and his security officer, a Police Constable, were killed during violence in Nittambuwa on May 9, 2022. That evening, shooting was reported in Nittambuwa, leading to six people being taken to Wathupitiwala Base Hospital. Hospital officials later confirmed that three of the injured had gunshot wounds, and a 27-year-old man, who was critically hurt, later died from his injuries. Reports indicate that Athukorala and his security officer fired at a group of protesters who were blocking their vehicle, injuring two people severely. The bodies of the MP and his security officer were discovered later while they were hiding in a nearby building. CCTV footage captured the moment when Athukorala fled the scene with his armed security officer. Many suspects have been arrested multiple times for their alleged connection to the murder of the MP.
