Saman Ekanayake, the former Secretary to the President, has been ordered to remain in custody until February 18 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. This situation arises from a complaint against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is accused of misusing over Rs. 16.2 million in public funds. It is claimed that this money was spent on a private trip to the United Kingdom (UK) for his wife's graduation ceremony in 2023. Ekanayake was arrested for allegedly helping to facilitate this by approving more than Rs. 1.62 billion for the former President's private visit to the UK. During a court session today (11), Colombo Fort Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama decided to extend Ekanayake's remand until February 18. This decision followed arguments from Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, who represented the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa, who defended Ekanayake.
