In Sri Lanka, over 4,000 cases of child abuse have been submitted to high courts, according to the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA). These cases fall under the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Act, No. 28 of 1998. Currently, there are 4,289 pending child abuse cases awaiting action in High Courts. Out of these, 1,683 cases are set to be addressed soon, as stated by the NCPA. The Attorney General has brought charges in High Courts for various crimes against children, which include obscene publications, exploitation, hiring children for sexual activities, acts of cruelty, rape, and severe sexual abuse. The NCPA highlighted that they are actively pursuing legal actions for serious offenses against children, with ongoing court proceedings taking place throughout the country.
