Consumers in Sri Lanka who spend more than Rs. 10,000 at cooperative sales outlets within a month will soon receive free life insurance coverage, as announced by the Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development, Wasantha Samarasinghe. After a recent event in Anuradhapura, the Minister stated that the insurance will be valued at over Rs. 300,000. He also noted that all members of cooperatives will qualify for this life insurance. Additionally, Minister Samarasinghe mentioned that cooperative employees will enjoy fair salaries and benefits, including life insurance, to help strengthen cooperatives as an important part of the national economy. He emphasized that the government plans to enhance the cooperative sector through a major reform program. “We will create a Co-op City (cooperative sales outlet) in every area and provide low-interest loans to help set up larger cooperative shops in cities,” he added.
