In 2025, the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) received a total of 10,455 complaints regarding children. Out of these, 8,514 complaints were related to the NCPA Act, while 1,941 did not fall under their direct purview. The complaints included 545 cases of sexual harassment and 231 instances of serious sexual abuse. Last year, the NCPA also reported 79 cases of teenage pregnancies and three abortions. Additionally, there were nine child marriages, 38 reported rapes, 150 incidents of cyber abuse against children, and 20 attempts of child suicide documented in 2025. The Authority received 42 complaints about children lacking birth certificates and nine cases of children under five left behind when their parents moved abroad. These statistics reveal ongoing issues regarding child safety and protection in Sri Lanka, emphasizing the need for ongoing attention and action, according to the NCPA.
