Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa explained today (27) why Chaminda Kularatne, the Deputy Secretary General of Parliament and Chief of Staff, was suspended from his position. During the weekly Cabinet media briefing at the Department of Government Information, Minister Jayatissa shared that an inquiry committee was set up last year to look into Kularatne's appointment. This committee was formed on August 19, 2025, to evaluate Kularatne's qualifications and the confirmation of his role in Parliament. According to Minister Jayatissa, the committee made two recommendations. He stated that it was determined Kularatne had secured his role by providing false information, improperly obtaining confirmation, and unlawfully claiming salary benefits he was not entitled to. These actions violated public service regulations and led to a financial loss, the Minister noted. As a result of the findings, Kularatne was suspended, and disciplinary actions have begun. Furthermore, the case has been sent to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, as some officials involved in his appointment may face scrutiny under the Anti-Corruption Act No. 9 of 2023, according to Minister Jayatissa. He also pointed out that the opposition participated in the inquiry, and anyone unhappy with the committee's findings can appeal in court. Chaminda Kularatne was officially suspended starting Friday (23).
