European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on Monday that a "successful India" contributes to a world that is more "stable, prosperous, and secure." This statement was made prior to a significant trade agreement between India and the 27-member European Union. During her three-day visit to India, von der Leyen attended the Republic Day celebrations as a chief guest, calling it an "honor of a lifetime." She and European Council President Antonio Costa were the distinguished guests at India's 77th Republic Day event. Von der Leyen shared on X, "A successful India makes the world more stable, prosperous, and secure. And we all benefit." She is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for summit discussions on Tuesday. At the upcoming India-EU summit, both parties are expected to announce the conclusion of the long-awaited free trade deal. Just days before her visit to New Delhi, von der Leyen remarked that India and the European Union are on the verge of a "historic trade agreement," which would create a market of two billion people, representing nearly a quarter of the global GDP. In her speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos last Tuesday, she stated, "I will travel to India. There is still work to do. But we are on the cusp of a historic trade agreement. Some call it the mother of all deals. One that would create a market of 2 billion people, accounting for almost a quarter of global GDP." She emphasized that this agreement would give Europe a first-mover advantage in one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic parts of the world, saying, "Europe wants to do business with the growth centers of today and the economic powerhouses of this century."
