General

The Supreme Court was informed today by the Attorney General that orders have been secured from both the Colombo Magistrate’s Court and the Colombo High Court. These orders prevent the directors of the local agent company for the MV X-Press Pearl from leaving Sri Lanka. This announcement was made by Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle, who represented the Attorney General during a court session discussing the progress of Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions related to the incident. The MV X-Press Pearl, a container ship registered in Singapore, caught fire in May 2021 near Colombo Port and burned for almost two weeks while carrying 81 containers filled with dangerous chemicals, including 25 tonnes of nitric acid. The fire led to severe marine pollution, with billions of plastic nurdles and harmful substances spilling into the waters around Sri Lanka, resulting in the death of marine life and harming coastal communities. In the weeks following the incident, dead turtles, dolphins, and whales were found washed ashore.
