Four petitions have been submitted to the Supreme Court opposing the Bill that aims to end the pension system for Members of Parliament. Today (22), Speaker of the House Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne announced in Parliament that he has also received an additional petition submitted to the Supreme Court. The Speaker pointed out that these petitions were filed according to Article 121(1) of the Constitution. The Bill, which seeks to eliminate pensions for Members of Parliament, was introduced to Parliament on January 7 by Dr. Harshana Nanayakkara, the Minister of Justice and National Integration. Petitioners had a 14-day window from that date to submit their challenges to the Bill. The Second Reading debate on the Bill is expected to take place at the end of next month. If the Bill is passed, the pension rights of 512 former Members of Parliament will be removed.
