A family that escaped to Tamil Nadu as refugees because of the economic crisis in Sri Lanka has filed a request at the Ramanathapuram Collector’s public meeting. They want to go back to their home country. Since the economic collapse in Sri Lanka, over 300 Sri Lankans have reportedly come to Tamil Nadu as refugees by sea starting in March 2022. The Tamil Nadu government is providing them shelter at the Mandapam Sri Lankan Tamil Rehabilitation Camp, where they receive food and basic necessities. The family, who is originally from Mannar, arrived by boat in Dhanushkodi in May 2023. They have asked Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon for help in returning to Sri Lanka. The family mentioned they want to go back through the correct legal process, but so far, the Tamil Nadu government has not taken any official steps to help them.
